What is Gunite?

If you guessed that Gunite is a trademark, you’re right.

Back in the early 1900s, an American taxidermist named Carl Akeley invented a certain mix of plaster to use in plaster molds of animals. He used a method of blasting the dry plaster material out of a hose, adding water to the stream as it was released.

Later on, he filed a patent for the equipment (the ‘cement gun’) and the material used in the gun (“gun”-ite). Interestingly, this method and material can be used not only in pools, but also in other building applications, particularly concrete repairs, and was used back in that time to reinforce old buildings that had weak spots.

The Gunite is held in a hopper, and blasted through a nozzle with the use of pneumatic pressure, immediately following which a stream of water is added. This can be closely controlled so the mix is adapted to the immediate requirement by the controller.

Gunite is essentially the same as Shotcrete, but the method is slightly different.
